Diyarbakır has a history tracing back to 7.500 B.C. The city is located at the north of Mesopotamia, in the Southeast Anatolian Region. Diyarbakir is famous for its watermelon and ramparts.


Tourist Attractions



Diyarbakir ramparts beleaguering the city are the main historical structures within the borders of the city. These are the second longest walls after the Great Walls of China. They are 5.5 km long and 7-8 m high. Having 6 entrances, these artifacts as the most impressive and splendid monuments of the city has 16 present castles inside. Ulu Mosque which is the oldest mosque in Anatolia and Mesudiye Madrasah as the oldest one in Anatolia are important tourist attractions of the city.

The authentic handicrafts compose the fabric of the city culture. The work of jewellery, sericulture and copperworking is well developed at Diyarbakir. Land works, rugs, kilims, saddlebags, embroidered peskir and more are the examples from the local arts and crafts.

Diyarbakir Culture and Art Festival reflects the cultural dynamism in Diyarbakir.

By the natural consequence of the existence of many dames, angling is prevalent at the city. Deve Gecidi Dam, Karakaya Dam and Kralkizi Dam are the most favourable ones for angling.

Cermik Thermal Tourism Center taking place at the eastern of Cermik district is a an ideal place for relaxation and the treatment of some health problems such as rheumatism, joint discomforts and calcification.

Wildlife is widespread at the city. Wild piges, wolves, jackales, beares, martenes, rabbits, squirrels and many kinds of birds enrich the wildlife in the city.


Food & Drink



Watermelons of gigantic proportion special to the city are different with their size and taste. Ciger kebab (cartlak kebab) is the main and famous dish of the culinary culture of Diyarbakir. Meat is the main supply of the city cuisine. Also, animal products such as egg, milk and milk products (especially yogurt and cheese) are consumed at a high rate. Although meat is more preferable vegetables are not disregarded.

The City cuisine is pretty rich. From vegetables to meat, you will have the chance of tasting from a large menu.

Meftune is the famous food of the city. It is made of different vegetables, mostly from aubergine. Icli kofte (stuffed meatball) and cig kofte are among the meat foods. Burma kadayif and nuriye are the most pervasive sweets. Kazyagi (goose oil), purslane, yarpuz, kenger, kuskonmaz, ebe gumeci, zucchini, gumbo and bean foods are the most frequently cooked vegetable dishes.

You should eat kaburga and drink licorice at one of the eateries of the city.



Shopping



Neighbourhood bazaars are the main shopping places of the city. You can find all authentic goods at these locations. Also, you will find shops around and near Kervansaray Hotel to buy bric-a-bracs, souvenirs and handicrafts. You should not leave the city without taking Diyarbakir rush with you.
